Pine Ridge
On August 7, 2007, the Oglala Sioux Tribal Council
passed Ordinance 07-40 which declares Pine Ridge Indian Reservation and
the aboriginal territorial boundaries of the Oglala Sioux Tribe to be a
"Nuclear Free Area" and provides that any person, agency or entity who
shall cause any nuclear pollution or contamination to enter the
confines of the Reservation, including its 1851 & 1868 Treaty
boundaries and aboriginal territory boundaries, "shall be prosecuted to
the fullest extent of the law."
On October 31, 2007 Oglala Sioux Tribal Court Judge Lisa Adams ruled
against Native American Energy Group and ordered the uranium
speculation company to be removed and excluded from the Reservation for
doing business without a license.
Work continues at Pine Ridge to gather data
concerning the health and environmental impact of historic and current
uranium mining upwind and upstream of the Reservation. Recently,
98 wells were closed at Pine Ridge. NAEG is appealing the court's decision to the Sioux Supreme Court.
